How to Choose a Gemstone: Quality, Treatments and Buying Checklist
Learn how to compare gemstone colour, carat weight, size, treatments and reports before buying a stone in India.
A gemstone can be meaningful for its appearance, a personal tradition or a gift. Whatever brings you to it, a good purchase starts with clear information about the actual stone being offered.
Start with the stone, not a promise
Look at photographs of the individual gem in natural-looking light. Notice its colour, visible inclusions, shape and cut. A stone that appeals to you is more useful than a vague claim that one colour or origin is automatically “best.” If you can, compare several examples of the same gem type before deciding.
Read the specifications carefully
- Identity: Check the named gem variety and whether it is described as natural, laboratory-grown or an imitation.
- Weight and dimensions: Carat describes weight, while millimetres describe physical size. Two stones of the same carat weight can look different when cut differently.
- Treatments: Ask whether the stone has been heated, dyed, filled or otherwise treated, and whether that affects care.
- Documentation: If an independent report is offered, check the issuing laboratory and match the report details to the stone. A report describes findings; it is not a promise of personal results.
Gemological laboratories can identify many stones and detectable treatments. Geographic origin, where reported, is an expert opinion and should not stand in for examining the individual gem. The GIA sample coloured-stone reports show the kinds of details a report can contain.
Check the complete purchase
Before paying, confirm the stone's price, setting or mounting if applicable, delivery terms, return policy and care advice. If a listing uses words such as “certified” or “untreated,” ask what evidence supports them. Clear answers make it easier to compare options within your budget.
